Otoplasty is a plastic surgical procedure that reduces prominence of the ear and can also improve the overall ear shape. These undesirable features are primarily the result of the growth and development of the internal cartilage framework of the ear and can be hereditary. The components of the procedure will vary depending on the extent of the problem. Dr. Forley will customize the surgery to your specific situation. The incisions are usually hidden in the back of the ear. The cartilage is reshaped using one or more techniques of scoring, suturing, and excision to reduce the excessive prominence and create balance with the opposite side. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision and a gentle pressure dressing is applied for several days. Pain is usually minimal and any noticeable swelling gradually resolves over the first several weeks.
